     Marjariasana | Cat pose

Marjari = Cat; Asana = Posture or Pose

The cat family has one of the most flexible spines in the animal kingdom. Even pet cats can teach us lessons in yoga! With a keen eye, the yogi absorbs ideas from the world around. Marjari asana, or the cat stretch, incorporates the excellent feline stretch in the yoga workout.

When you practice this pose, you may find it slightly difficult to round up the top of your upper back. In such a case, you can ask your friend to place his/her hand on your back, between your shoulder blades. This helps you to activate that area.

         Precaution of marjariasana

  • Avoid this in case of neck injury, head injury, and knee injury.
  • Strain on certain muscles in the body is generally as far as it goes when it comes to possibilities of something going wrong and, as a result, means that you avoid straining your body beyond more than its capacity and ability.
  • In the event that you are already suffering from a head injury, you should ensure that your head is maintained in direct line with your torso.
  • If you are pregnant, be careful about contraction and stretch in the abdomen. Avoid any contraction in the abdomen.

       Procedure of marjariasana

  • Come onto your fours. Form a table such that your back forms the table top and your hands and feet form the legs of the table.
  • Keep your arms perpendicular to the floor, with the hands directly under the shoulders and flat on the ground; your knees are hip-width apart.
  • Look straight ahead.
  • As you inhale, raise your chin and tilt your head back, push your navel downwards and raise your tailbone. Compress your buttocks. Do you feel a slight tingle here?
  • Hold the Cat pose and take long, deep breaths.
  • Follow this by a counter movement: As you exhale, drop your chin to your chest and arch your back up as much as you can; relax the buttocks.
  • Hold this pose for a few seconds before you return to the initial table-like stage.
  • Continue five or six rounds before you come out of this yoga posture.
  • When you do the movement slowly and gracefully, its effect is more powerful and meditative.
